OHIO WOMEN INC. WORKING FOR FULL EQUALITY

The Ohio Commission on the Status of Women and the Ohio Coalition for the Implementation of the Equal Rights Amendment joined together on October 1, 1977 to form Ohio Women, Inc.

Many groups in Ohio have worked for the full equality of women. Ohio Women, Inc. seeks to bring them together to combine their forces and to join with other women from throughout the state to work in unity for women's rights.

Ohio women were among the first in the nation to demand equal rights and have won many victories in their struggle for equality. But many victories still need to be won, and Ohio Women, Inc. is continuing the work begun long ago./p>

The mission of Ohio Women, Inc. is "To encourage, affirm, support, and safeguard the women of Ohio as they move to achieve their full potential in every aspect of their lives."

Women of diverse backgrounds will work together toward:

1. Elimination of barriers to the full participation by women in all decisions affecting their individual lifestyles, their families, and the society in which they live.

2. Implementation of the 1977 International Women's Year Plan of Action by both the public and private sectors. That plan includes recommendations about: arts and humanities, battered women, business, child abuse, child care, credit, disabled women, education, elective and appointive office, employment, equal rights amendment, health, homemakers, insurance, international affairs, media, minority women, offenders, older women, rape, reproductive freedom, rural women, sexual preference, statistics, welfare and poverty

3. Ratification and implementation of the Equal Rights Amendment

  • work consciously and consistently to involve women who are not currently identified with any feminist organization and make a concerted effort to,
  • involve minority women by addressing their particular needs,
  • provide organizations with services designed to strengthen their ability to improve the status of women in Ohio,
  • serve as a clearinghouse for information about the rights, needs and concerns of women
  • create linkages between individuals and organizations with similar interests and, when appropriate, convene task groups to take action,
  • provide resources to the private sector for improving opportunities and services for women,
  • locate or conduct research on women's issues for public and private policy making bodies,
  • monitor and distribute information about legislation affecting the status of women,
  • and develop an Ohio Women's lobby.
